Late Summer On Old Lake Shore Road: An Angola Resident's Guide To The Last Two Weeks Of Beach Season

If you have lived along this shore for more than a season, you already know the rhythm. Bennett Beach fills up by 11 on a hot Saturday. The parking situation at Lake Erie Beach Park gets creative. The band schedule at the Beach Club at Mickey Rats leans harder on tribute acts as August wears on. None of that is news.

What is new is that the town has quietly decided the whole shoreline is one system now, not a string of separate lots and beach entrances. Two documents from this summer make that official, and both change what the last two weeks of beach season are actually worth to someone who lives here.

The Two Papers That Reset The Map

On June 29, 2026, New York Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley and the Town of Evans jointly announced adoption of the Evans Parks and Sturgeon Point Marina Master Plan, a comprehensive strategy for the marina and nine other public parks. It followed a three-year planning process funded through the Department of State's Local Waterfront Revitalization Program. Six weeks earlier, on May 5, 2026, the town launched the Explore Evans-Angola visitor landing page, an attempt to pull Bennett Beach, Sturgeon Point, the parks, the restaurants, and the lakefront lodging into a single front door at exploreevans.com.

Read together, they say the town is finished treating the 12 miles of shoreline as a set of unrelated day-trip destinations. That is the frame worth carrying into August.

Here is what the master plan actually covers, in the language of the people who wrote it:

• Sturgeon Point Marina, more than 200 slips for vessels up to 50 feet, four launch ramps, dry docks, a fuel dock, a pump-out station, picnic areas and trails, a restaurant, and a playground
• The 23-acre Sturgeon Point Bluffs, roughly 1,000 linear feet of shoreline frontage the town bought from Erie County in 2011 for one dollar, still mostly wooded with informal trails and two pavilions
• A 32-acre inland woodland parcel included in that same 2011 land sale, along Sturgeon Point Road and Larkin
• Nine additional public parks under the Evans Parks Department

Supervisor Ray Ashton framed the adoption as ongoing and future improvements aimed at both the visitor experience and the desires of the local Evans community. The order of those two audiences is worth noticing. For decades, Sturgeon Point has run as a regional asset. In 2019, roughly 87 percent of its 4,248 boat launches came from visitors from across Western New York, not from residents. The plan is the first serious attempt in years to rebalance that.

What The Three Beaches Actually Cost You In Mid-August

The beach conversation among neighbors tends to collapse three very different places into one word. Late summer is when the differences matter most, because lifeguard hours, water testing, and closing dates diverge quickly after Labor Day.

The practical read: if you have not already used your Empire Pass much this summer, the math on Evangola gets better every weekend you go. The pavilions at Evangola are the only reserveable indoor-outdoor gathering space on the shore that seats more than about 30. If you are hosting anything family-sized before Labor Day, the pavilion pricing is public and reservable through the state parks system, and the yurts, which sleep six on cots with a refrigerator and a microwave, are still bookable through Reserve America into the fall shoulder.

Lake Erie Beach Park is the one that catches people off guard. Because it is free and small, "if the lot is full you just park along the road and walk a bit more," as one long-time visitor put it on Yelp. The playground and basketball court make it the shortest-attention-span beach on the shore, which is its own kind of virtue on a weekday evening.

The Restaurant Strip You Already Drive Past

The stretch of Lake Shore Road around 8934, where the Beach Club at Mickey Rats and Captain Kidds sit on the same sand, is where most of the after-work traffic lands in August. Mickey Rats opened the 2026 season under new ownership, added summer volleyball, cornhole, and softball leagues, and kept the live music schedule that has run for more than four decades. If you drive Lake Shore Road on a Saturday and wonder why the lot is full at 4 p.m., a league game is the usual answer.

Behind the newly remodeled Chick's Bowling Center at 8196 Erie Road sits The Sound Ground at Chick's, an outdoor concert venue that has become the workhorse of the local tribute-band circuit. The lineup this year has run through Strictly Hip, The Floyd Concept, Afterglow, Applejack, and Eaglez. The Village of Angola Summer Concert Series, run by the town at the Village bandshell on Wednesday evenings, is the free counterweight, and it winds down as August closes.

The Marina Question Nobody Is Asking Out Loud

Sturgeon Point sits on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, 17 miles southwest of Buffalo and 22 miles northeast of Dunkirk. It is the only Harbor of Refuge along the 30 miles of shoreline between Buffalo Harbor and the Cattaraugus Creek at Sunset Bay. That single geographic fact is why the master plan matters more than the average municipal document.

In February 2026, the town opened bids for Sturgeon Point Marina dredging. In June, the plan for the marina and the 66 acres of surrounding town-owned uplands and bluffs was adopted. The 1984 cost-sharing agreement between the town and NYSDEC that built the marina in the first place bound the town to all future operations and maintenance, including reasonable winter access for ice fisherman parking. Any real revitalization has to work inside those constraints.

For a resident, the interpretation is straightforward. The bluffs above the marina, 23 acres the town bought for a dollar and left largely alone for 15 years, are the biggest quiet asset on the shore. The plan opens the door to more formal trails, more picnic infrastructure, and probably some form of expanded gathering space. If you have never walked up from the marina to the bluff pavilions, this is the last summer they will look exactly the way they look now. A Two-Week Local Plan Before Labor Day

If August 3 through Labor Day is the window you actually have, here is one way to spend it that uses the shoreline as the system the town now says it is:

1. A weekday morning at Lake Erie Beach Park while the lifeguards are still on the noon-to-seven schedule, followed by lunch at one of the pizza and grill spots along Kennedy Road
2. One evening at The Sound Ground for a Friday or Saturday tribute show, parking behind Chick's on Erie Road
3. A Wednesday at the Village of Angola Summer Concert Series before it closes for the year
4. One Sunday drive to Evangola for the pavilion picnic you have talked about since June, with a walk along the shale cliff line north of the campground
5. A late-August walk up from Sturgeon Point Marina to the bluff overlook pavilions, ideally on a weekday when the boat traffic is thin
6. A Bennett Beach sunset on the last weekend before Labor Day, when the dune walk keeps the crowd down

Then a note in the calendar for next May, when the first phase of whatever the master plan produces will start to show up on the ground.
